Rouge noticed Knuckles carrying a bouquet of roses while hanging from a tree passing some time. Curious at what the red echidna's actions were she smirked to herself and flew off the branch towards Knuckles.
"Hey handsome. What have you got there?" she asked in a flirtatious tone as she landed in front of him. She rested her hand on her hip standing in front of Knuckles blocking his direction.
"Wh-what are you doing here?" Knuckles stuttered embarrassed. He swiftly hid the roses behind his back but Rouge could still see the top petals poking out from behind. She chuckled a little when she saw Knuckles turn red in the face almost matching his whole body's fur.
"Who's the lucky girl Knuckie? I assume it's for Valentines day," Rouge teased. "I didn't know you were into this day. Is it for your Master Emerald?"
Knuckles tried hiding his face by looking away but he became flustered the more Rouge began to tease him.
"No! And before you go after it, I've got Sonic watching over it until I get back," Knuckles responded. He shifted the roses behind him trying to keep them out of view. Rouge closed her eyes and chuckled.
"You know it's cute when your blush like that," she flirted. "But I guess your lucky girl will say the same thing when she sees you like this." Rouge's tone suddenly changed. Although it was still playful there was a hint of jealousy on mentioning the phrase 'luck girl'. Rouge's facial expression began to change from flirtatious look into slight bit of envy. No matter how much she denied it, Rouge always a huge crush on Knuckles. The only way she was ever able to express it was from her teasing.
Before Knuckles could say another word Rouge suddenly huffed, having her emotions get the better of her, and folded her arms.
"Er... are you okay Rouge?" Knuckles asked confused, his blush going down. Rouge unfolded her arms and began to walk away from Knuckles in the opposite direction he was going.
"Fine. Just fine. You go and give those roses to that lucky girl of yours," she huffed, clearly jealous now. "I'll just be going out of your way!"
As she passed Knuckles he brought out the roses from behind his back, looked at them, took a deep breath...
"Wait Rouge! Th-they're for you!"
Rouge stopped in her tracks. The echidna's face retreated back into it's red state, if not redder than before. He looked ahead of him as he held the bouquet of roses out to Rouge's view. Rouge turned herself slightly to see Knuckles who was rubbing the back of his head shyly. Her cheeks flared up.
"I... err... got you... these..." he said shyly. "Happy Valentines Rouge..." Knuckles swallowed waiting for her response. "Yeah... um... I... I wanted to... surprise you... with these." Knuckles looked over to Rouge a bit and stretched his arm out holding out the roses to her. Rouge saw that the wrapping around the roses was decorated with emerald shapes. She took the bouquet from the now blushing and embarrassed echidna and as Knuckles dropped his arm, there written under an emerald where his gloved hand was covering were the words 'To Rouge'.
"Knuckles..." Rouge was now lost for words. "Thank you.
Knuckles nodded still not facing Rouge. However a shy smile formed on both their faces.
